LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – Zambian Breweries (ZB) joins the rest of the country in celebrating Zambia’s 57th independence anniversary which falls on 24th October.

Zambia’s largest brewer was established in 1968, becoming one of the first processing companies formed under the independence Government.

As the economic development agenda in the newly established republic evolved post-independence, so too did the company’s role in stimulating sustainable socioeconomic growth in local communities.

Today, the company is one of Zambia’s largest employers in the manufacturing sector with its operations contributing about 15 percent of total industry employment and 3.9 percent of total manufacturing GDP.

In 2019 alone, ZB contributed about ZMW1.6 billion to government revenue through direct and indirect activities.

Zambian Breweries Country Director Michelle Kilpin said that Zambian Breweries was proud to be one of the country’s most consistent companies since independence despite the countless hurdles the iconic company has had to overcome over the decades.

She attributed the company’s resilience to the tireless efforts of its staff – most of whom are Zambian – as they strived to build a business that put the welfare of local communities and the country at the heart of its operations.

“Zambia’s Independence signifies the greatest strength of our business, which is the Zambian people, our workforce that are working hard every day to build a profitable business that is impacting and contributing positively to the country’s development,” she said.

“Our commitment to hiring local contractors across the value chain coupled with our emphasis on sourcing raw materials such as sugar, maize, sorghum, barley, and cassava from local small-scale farmers has created countless job opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, transport, tourism, hospitality and associated industries. The result is an explosion in secondary benefits for both urban and rural communities.”

Ms Kilpin further urged Zambians to drink responsibly this independence weekend adding that Zambia was built on a strong moral foundation, and it was every citizen’s responsibility to ensure the founding fathers’ legacy was celebrated in an honourable way.

Zambian Breweries prides itself on producing quality local products such as Mosi and Eagle lager, which carry the identity and emblem of Zambia across the country and the globe.

Feel Good Bar’s proprietor, Faless Banda called on his clients to practice responsible drinking as they celebrated the country’s independence.

And Porps Express Business Manager, Charles Zulu said: “We are grateful to Zambian Breweries for the impact they have had on Zambian Businesses. They have helped change a lot of lives including mine. Our businesses solely depend on the products the brewery produces, and we want ZB to do more in the future as years go by.”

“We wish Zambia a happy 57th Independence and we thank Zambian Breweries for being a key stakeholder in developing the alcohol industry to what it is today.”

Porps Express is one of the most popular bars in Lusaka’s Matero township.

Through the ‘Cheers to being responsible together’ Smart Drinking campaign, the brewery seeks to ensure people prioritise their health and safety through moderate consumption of alcohol this weekend and beyond.

Zambian Breweries runs an annual smart drinking campaign whose aim is to help inculcate a culture of moderate alcohol consumption in the country to help protect the citizen’s wellbeing.
