FQM SUPPORTS TRANSFORMATIVE ROAD PROJECT IN ZAMBIA
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has put its backing behind the upgrade the 371-kilometre Mutanda-Kaoma – a route essential for movement of in-bound materials and out-bound copper products from/to the ports of Walvis Bay and Durban.
The mining firm, which is a major user of the road, believes that a well-developed road network is the lifeblood of a thriving mining sector, facilitating the efficient and cost-effective transportation of vital materials, equipment, and personnel.
Speaking at the signing of the concession agreement for the project, FQM Country Manager Dr Godwin Beene said that investment in road infrastructure can also help Zambia achieve its economic development goals as outlined in Vision 2030 and the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP).
FQM is participating as an investor and technical advisor on the project. The company’s participation underscores its commitment to Zambia’s development, aligning with national priorities and delivering tangible benefits to the country’s economy and its people.
“For far too long, this vital road’s predominantly gravel surface has severely hampered the movement of goods, affecting logistics efficiency and hindering economic growth. This project will fundamentally change that reality,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, the Minister of Finance and National Planning, Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane, commended FQM for partnering with the government to deliver development through infrastructure projects.
He added that the construction of the road would lead to job creation and noted that, due to increased traffic on the road, new businesses would likely be established to provide goods and services to transporters using the route.
“This road will link Kaoma and the rest of Western Province into North-Western and the Copperbelt, making the journey short. Apart from that, this is a road beyond North-Western and Western Provinces; it is a road that also connects Zambia to South Africa and Namibia.
“This road continues from Kaoma Kasempa to Solwezi, connecting to Mwinilunga, which will go into Congo then continues to Kipushi then to Lubumbashi. It is a major international route that we are talking about. This road is also beyond driving on a nice road; it is also the road to bring money in our pockets. Because of this road, those of you who are traders will be able to trade with Western Province, Namibia, South Africa, and Botswana,” he said.
The road is a lifeline for the communities it serves, providing access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. It also supports economic development by facilitating the movement of goods and services and unlocking opportunities in remote areas.
“The Mutanda-Kaoma road upgrade offers multiple benefits such as unlocking the economic potential of Copperbelt, North-Western and Western Provinces. It will stimulate growth and create opportunities for local communities, strengthening Zambia’s Western Corridor and improving access to key trade routes, including the Lobito Rail Corridor; and addresses the Government’s call for increased infrastructure investment through a cost-effective public-private partnership model, as well as generating substantial employment during both construction and operation phases,” he said.
“The completion of this road will not only improve the flow of goods and services but also enhance safety and efficiency for daily commuters. It will improve access to healthcare, education, and markets for communities along its length. This is more than just an agreement; it’s a commitment to a brighter future for Zambia,” Dr Beene added.
The mining firm is of the view that lack of accessibility is one of the main hindrances to rural development in Zambia and that better accessibility through an improved road network has the potential to transform even the most remote areas into viable investment destinations, thus creating employment and business opportunities for the locals.
First Quantum’s commitment to infrastructure development extends beyond this project. Over the years, FQM has invested over US$2 million in road infrastructure within its operational areas in Solwezi and Kalumbila Districts over the past decade. This investment reflects the company’s belief that robust road networks are essential for economic growth, facilitating access to services, markets, and investment opportunities, particularly in rural areas.
