FQM CHAMPIONS CONSERVATION CAREERS
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has showcased its dedication to sustainable development and fostering the next generation of conservationists at the 2024 Zambia Conservation Careers Fair.
FQM’s Government Relations Superintendent, Winnie Solopi Kakunta highlighted the company’s diverse range of employment opportunities across various sectors, including conservation farming, community development, and healthcare.
“As you are all aware, FQM embraces a vast spectrum of career paths. Our mining operations encompass a multitude of roles beyond just engineering. We invest in conservation farming, community engagement, and healthcare, demonstrating that our mines are a significant employer for Zambia as a whole. When we speak of local content, we demonstrate a substantial commitment to the country,” Ms Kakunta explained.
FQM’s presence at the fair emphasised its commitment to promoting the coexistence of mining and wildlife conservation.
Ms Kakunta underscored the company’s “coexistence” strategy, which aims to minimise environmental impact and support biodiversity.
FQM Trident’s Programme Lead – Wildlife and Forestry, Dr David Squarre highlighted the company’s dedication to cultivating a conservation mindset among young people.
“FQM is proud to sponsor this event and inspire the next generation of conservationists. We are sharing our experiences in integrating biodiversity conservation into our mining operations and demonstrating that economic growth and environmental protection can be mutually achieved,” Dr Squarre stated.
The fair served as a platform for students and industry professionals to network, gain valuable knowledge, and explore diverse career paths within conservation. Students, such as Ndanji Simwanda, expressed their appreciation for the insights gained about the varied career opportunities available in conservation.
“I had no idea that my interests and skills could contribute to conservation. This event has broadened my horizons and shown me that I can make a difference, irrespective of my chosen field of study,” said Simwanda.
The Zambia Conservation Careers Fair was a resounding success, showcasing a strong commitment to conservation within Zambia. FQM’s participation served as a testament to its dedication to responsible mining practices and fostering a sustainable future for the country.
