ZAMBIAN BREWERIES JOINS THE COALITION AGAINST ILLICIT ALCOHOL
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – The Coalition Against Illicit Alcohol (CAIA) has welcomed new members into the alliance in a concerted effort to fight the scourge of illicit alcohol in the country. The new members include the Churches Association of Zambia (CHAZ), the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA), Zambian Breweries, DGM Beverages, Champion Industries, and Tiemann Beverages.
The strategic alliance is a crucial step toward creating a social movement aimed at eradicating the sale and consumption of illicit alcohol, particularly low-cost, high-ABV illicit spirits. This initiative will mobilize communities, families, and individuals to actively combat this pressing issue.
Illicit alcohol poses a serious threat to public health as it is unregulated and contains unknown ingredients in unspecified quantities. This illegal market not only undermines government revenue but also endangers the lives of consumers, contributing to a range of health issues and social problems.
CAIA was formed to unite diverse organisations across Zambia – private and public – in addressing the issue of illicit alcohol. Its multi-pronged approach involves government agencies, civil society organisations, and the private sector working together to combat this critical issue.
“On behalf of the Coalition Against Illicit Alcohol (CAIA), I am honoured to welcome everyone to our coalition. Today, we unite with a shared commitment to combat the scourge of illicit alcohol that plagues our communities. By joining forces, we aim to protect the health and well-being of Zambian consumers, ensuring a safer and brighter future for all,” said CAIA co – chairperson Dr Christopher Kalila.
Speaking at the event, Zambian Breweries Country Director Thais Cavinatto expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Coalition Against Illicit Alcohol (CAIA) for welcoming their participation. “My sincere gratitude to the Coalition Against Illicit Alcohol (CAIA) for accepting our request as Zambian Breweries to join this pivotal coalition. It is a privilege to stand alongside esteemed industry leaders and stakeholders who are deeply committed to tackling the serious issue of illicit alcohol.”
“As we join forces with CAIA, I am filled with optimism about the impact we can collectively make. By leveraging our combined expertise and resources, we can effectively combat the menace of illicit alcohol and create a safer, healthier environment for all Zambians,” she further stated.
The collaboration with CAIA will see stakeholders and members join forces in initiatives and efforts by the coalition in the fight against illicit alcohol and its resulting negative effects on the economic and social wellbeing of communities across the country.
