EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS: FQM DISBURSES OVER K3.4M IN COOPERATIVE GRANTS
SOLWEZI, ZAMBIA – Thirteen cooperatives under the Tujipamo Multi-Purpose Project are set to benefit from a disbursement of over K3.4 million in grants by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) through its subsidiary Kansanshi Mining.
The project, initiated in 2022, aims to empower local cooperatives by providing grants that drive business activities and community development.
North-Western Province Permanent Secretary Colonel Grandson Katambi (Rtd) commended First Quantum for its continued collaboration with the government in fostering cooperative development that encouraged the growth of small and medium enterprises in the country.
He highlighted the impact of such partnerships and initiatives on the progression of local communities, noting that they reflected a shared commitment to enhancing livelihoods and supporting resilient cooperatives for sustainable long-term development.
The Permanent Secretary urged beneficiaries to use the grants effectively, emphasising the broader responsibility they carry, stating: “Each kwacha represents the hopes and aspirations of not just your families but the entire community. Let us ensure these funds create meaningful and lasting change.”
Speaking at the same event, Solwezi Mayor, Remmy Kalepa acknowledged the mining firm’s efforts to empower communities around its areas of operations, noting that they aligned with government’s own efforts through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
He called for continued collaboration between stakeholders for continued smooth mining operations, and community centric development in line with the Department of Community Development policies and initiatives with regards to the socio-economic empowerment of local communities.
Kansanshi Mining Commercial Manager Stuart Griffiths reiterated the company’s dedication to corporate social investment, particularly in supporting small and medium enterprises.
“Our goal is not just to provide resources but to build platforms for wealth and job creation, ensuring economic resilience for years to come,” he said, outlining the rigorous process behind the grant allocation, highlighting the support provided to cooperatives based on their performance.
“Five cooperatives that have demonstrated consistent business development will receive over K382,000 each, while the remaining eight will receive half this amount as they work towards meeting key performance indicators,” he explained.
Speaking through a representative, His Royal Highness Chief Kapijimpanga of Solwezi District lauded Kansanshi Mining for its efforts in community development, urging beneficiaries to honour their commitments by following the submitted proposals, adding that with their dedication, the grants had the capability of not only transforming their lives but also uplift the community.
The Chief further called for continued dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the initiative’s success.
With over K6 million distributed this year alone, First Quantum remains steadfast in its mission to support local enterprises, strengthen the economic fabric of North-Western Province, and foster a brighter, more sustainable future for Zambia.
